Zindagi Gulzar Hai - A feast to ones eyes!

Today I am here to make a much interesting comparison of our current Indian TV industry with our neighboring country’s television industry.

Interesting because I never thought I would ever engage in watching any of the Pakistan TV series/movies or listening to their music. My disinterest in Pakistan entertainment was not because of the tensed relationship with the country. But I myself am not a big fan of TV serials. The kind of drama that is filled in Indian TV Channels today is just exhausting and tiring to watch. I hardly follow any Indian TV series. When I visit home on vacation, I join my family in watching the program they watch and that’s how I keep myself updated with what is trending in the TV industry.

I love listening to music and I listen to all genres of music. I did start listening to Pakistani music since last few years and have admired their music. Strings, Fuzon,  Kaavish, Jal, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Ghulam Ali, Parveen Abida, Quratulain Baloch and many more. Last couple of years with the introduction of MTV Coke Studio; I have been listening to both Indian and Pakistan Coke studio music; and no doubt their music is commendable. We cannot forget that Pakistan also has a culturally rich past.

However not being a big movie or television fan; I have a very strict choice of what I watch on screen. I love documentaries, movies inspired by real life incidents or persons, War related movies, Sci-fi fantasies, medieval and ancient history related etc…I love to see and listen to quality stuffs.

Given the context; I never thought I would end up watching TV shows outside American & British umbrella. I have been staying with few friends for past few months and they are a big fan of Hindi TV series.  So I started giving them company while watching the TV series. And then we started watching “Zindagi Gulzar Hai(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zindagi_Gulzar_Haiowing to my friend’s crush on Fawad Khan. It was a set of 26 Episodes each of 45 mins length. And what a serial it was. I must admit – I fell in love with Pakistan's TV industry.

What a quality serial it was. Just in 26 episodes – i.e. approximately 20 Hrs; they had completed the series; but at the end of it; we never felt the story was rushed through or they missed out on anything. It had everything – Handsome Hero; Beautiful Heroine (mind you beautiful but not flashy); a rich family and their lifestyle, a lower middle class struggling family and their difficulties, Love and Romance, Ego and misunderstanding, social issues around women and class/status. It was correctly paced. Even without displaying any kind of physical or intimate scenes; one can feel the intense romance between Zaroon and Kashaf. The relationship between siblings, friends, couples, parents and children – everything has been so well portrayed; that one can’t avoid falling in love with every character in the serial.
Zaroon, Asmara and Osama - Friends in Zindagi Gulzar Hai

Role of Kashaf Murtaza was played by Sanam Saeed and she has not been pictured as one of those faultless beautiful creatures; instead she is a normal girl with whom one can easily relate to. Similarly Zaroon Junaid played by Fawad Khan is a character who is a little conservative despite of belonging to a rich class family; wants to join the government job instead of joining his dad's business and so on. Every single person has acted fabulously well.

Ashar & Khirad in Humsafar
Kashaf and Zaroon in a Romantic scene
Fawad Khan might not need any introduction after his appearance in Khoobsurat movie released on 2014 against Sonam Kapoor. But I definitely have become a fan of his acting. He fits in well in all shades of emotion. A complete actor one can say. And of course; he can sing :) I have watched another drama Humsafar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humsafar); which is a little more dramatic than Zindagi Gulzar haiThe series contained 23 episodes each of 35 mins – so in 14 hours they had completed the story.  I did not like it as much as Zindagi Gulzar hai; but definitely anytime watchable compared to Indian Serials.

The best part of these 2 serials was there was not even a single hug or kiss scene (forget any other intimate scenes) between Zaroon-Kashaf or Ashar – Khirad; but still we could feel those romantic moments between them.

Zaroon & Kashaf's Nikaah
Some examples - They show the nikaah of Zaroon and Kashaf as a sequence of photos in a matter of 5 mins. And in Indian serials; this same scene would run for atleast 2 weeks – i.e for 3 Hours (10 episodes of 20 mins each). And there was a bedroom scene on their first night; but that was so natural and realistic; a simple conversation between the two; the slight embarrassment of how or what to talk to each other. And in Indian serials; I don’t even want to get into the details of what is shown. In Humsafar serial; there is a scene where Khirad (Mahira khan) dances in rain; and Ashar watches her. But the shot is so simple and nice that even you fall in love with that scene. It was not turned into a vulgar portrayal of body parts; where the camera focuses on the hero and/or heroine with water dripping from the lips or nose or down the neck etc….
Kashaf Fixing Zaroon's button
And the famous after-marriage scene where a wife fixes her patidev’s shirt; for heaven’s sake the button needn't always be of the shirt’s collar. I mean just to create a romantic moment; it has become so predictable and boring. I was so surprised when the same scene was present between Zaroon & Kashaf; and the button of shirt’s sleeve was broken. She fixed it and he admires her for knowing these small things despite of being a working woman; which his mom or sister never did for him. And trust me; that’s so much more romantic.

I mean seriously; you really don’t need to have heroines dupatta fall on hero’s face; or her earrings get stuck in his shirt or make her fall off from the chair into his arms every now and then to create a romantic moment. And you really don’t need to have the serial run for years together; dragging every bit of it so much so that it loses its charm. Again I am not commenting on the acting skills of Indian industry; there are immensely talented actors and actresses in our industry; but we really need to start making good dramas without these unnecessary masalas.

After watching Zindagi Gulzar Hai; I can now believe that one can make decent non boring romantic dramas with a lot of intensity without requiring to have any pornographic shots.  My heart felt huge thanks to the writer Umera Ahmed  ; Director Sultana Siddiqui and entire team of this series; for making me realize that there are people who still create good dramas.

I should not forget the beautiful title track of both the series.

Zindagi Gulzar hai – Hadiqa Qayani

Zindagi khaak na thi khaak uratay guzri
Tujh say kya kehtay teray pass jo aatay guzri
Din jo guzra toh kisi yaad ki ro main guzra
Shaam aayi toh koi khuwaab dikhatay guzri
Acchay waqton ki tamana main rahi umr-e-rawaan
Waqt aisa tha kay bus naaz uthatay guzri
Zindagi jis kay muqadar main ho khushiyan teri
Ussko aata hai nibhana so nibhatay guzri
Zindagi naam udher hai kisi sarshaari ka
Aur udher door say aik aas lagatay guzri
Raat kya aayi kay tanhaai ki sarghoshi main
Hoo ka aalam th amagar suntay sunatay guzri
Zindagi Naam Udher Hai Kisi Sarshaari Ka
Baarha choonk si jaati hai musaafat dil ki
Kis ki awaaz thi yeh kis ko bulatay guzri

Humsafar - Quratulain Balouch

Mohabbaton ka safar is tarha bhi guzra ta
Shikasta dil they musaafir shikasta paayi na thi
Adawatei thi, taghaful tha, ranjishein thi
Bircharnay walay main sab kuch tha, bewafai na thi
Bicharthay waqt un aankhon main thi humari gazal
Gazal bhi who jo, kisi ko abhi sunayi na thi
Kabhi yeh haal ke  dono main yakdili thi bohot
Kabhi yeh marhala jaisay ke ashnayi na thi
Ajeet hoti hai rahe sukhan bhi dekh naseer
Wahan bhi aa gaye aakhir jahan rasayi na thi.

  3. I stumbled into these two serials by accident. The first was ZGH which started off slowly and soon became irresistible. It is a masterpiece of casting, acting and script.
The supporting characters truly deserve to be called that. They make the main character shine, as they shine themselves. The romance is portrayed with a light touch , as are the many struggles and the final resolutions. It bears watching repeatedly. Sanam Saeed was marvelous as Khashaf. I was even more impressed when I saw some interviews of her as a really bubbly, and cheerful personality which showed me her histrionic skills in portraying Khashaf.

After ZGH ended I was in withdrawal and started watching Humsafar. It began slowly with an improbable plot but soon evolved into a poignant love story. Once again the acting was superb, especially of Mahira Khan.

One is charmed by Khasahf but haunted by Khirad.

I think Pakistani serials are so good especially because they do not money to squander on pointless and gaudy distractions and must instead rely on great writing and acting. I have seen some of these actors in lavish Indian movies where they got swallowed by the Bollywood machine.

When Life Humbles You

When you are planning life, life makes it's own plans and often takes you by surprise. Not that you grow arrogant knowingly, but we all tend to take life for granted while on our mission to success. There are often times when we oversee simpler yet most important ingredients of life. I believe that's when someone takes control of  life  to put a brake and slow you down. It has various innovative ways to slow you down. Nothing uncommon in the world, but definitely very new to you. I have always been slowed down by life, ever time I rushed through doing tens of thousands of things. Now looking back, I think once every 2-3 years, I am pulled over the freeway of life for speeding. This time it was my health. I have been an anti doctor anti hospital person despite of coming from family of doctors. I believe in home remedies. Steam will take care of my cold; drink some herbs for immunity, tolerate pain without painkillers, go to gym or running when you have headache so on and

Ahamasmi Yodha - My First Tattoo

I finally did it. It isn’t a great achievement to show off, but for me it’s one more item on my bucket list getting fulfilled. So I am very happy about it. What did I do? Oh like I said nothing great – I just got my FIRST Tattoo  :) My first Tattoo Artist I had done a lot of research on it since last couple of months. I wanted to get it done on my birthday, but it somehow dint work out.  For all the first timers, I wanted to list out my personal experience, just in case it helps :) First of all, I felt it will be very helpful if you have some friends who would have got it done already. But I dint have that privilege. So I went through lot of blogs and articles in About.com, Wikihow, YahooAnswers etc… Well Google, the new lord of knowledge :) has all that you need to know. So, in summary, what I got from all these sites were First decide on what you want to get tattooed and where. Go over it again and again, since it is permanent, you will have to live with it your e

Don't let the tamed ones tell you how to LIVE!

I came across this image on someone’s Facebook wall; and I couldn’t resist it. It triggered various thoughts in me that I was compelled to write a blog. I spent major part of my last decade trying to get things settled in; to plan for a backup with a backup so I could do something seriously adventurous. But it was not until late last year that I realized I should no longer wait for a timeline to stabilize professionally, financially, personally to pursue my interests. I don't need to follow a linear approach.  I don't think I can ever have enough savings to quit the job and pursue hiking/travelling/painting full time (and well, I am not a lottery person either). And I don't think I want to quit the job in the first place, I want to continue supporting my needs.  One thing that I did, last few years was try and pursue my interest whenever I got a chance. But what I started doing since last 6 months is, to create those opportunities to pursue my interests; and align

Life... A Blank Page!

Whenever I open a notebook and come across the set of blank pages; my mind goes blank. For some reason, it always reminds me of my life. It forces me to start thinking about my life; about the past and the future. Being part of the age of computers and belonging to the IT industry, I hardly get an opportunity to actually pick a pen and write in the notebook. I write lot of blogs, poems etc… but I write them on the webpage or in Microsoft word in my laptop.  Once in a while I like to go back to traditional form of writing; using the actual pen and paper. And in last few years; I noticed that every time I try doing that for some reason the blank paper gets me all philosophical.         Although I never have that thought while opening the book; but whenever I see those blank pages; I just go blank. I always feel that my life is staring back at me with all those unanswered silenced questions, doubts, thoughts…forcing me to think – What does my life look like? What if I h

Radha-Krishan jaisi jodi hai!! But Why?

I was with couple of my friends on a trip earlier this month, when we landed on the topic of Radha while listening to the song “ Radha on the dance floor, Radha wants to party …” from the movie Student of the Year . My friend suddenly told “ Isn’t our culture a little strange? Although Radha and Krishna were never married, every time people see a good couple they say “ RadhaKrishan jaisi Jodi hai! ”(ie. Couple like Radha-Krishna). ” For those who aren’t familiar with Hindu mythology; Radha & Krishna appear in the Dvapara Yuga which is the 3 rd out of four yugas (4 th one being Kali Yuga, the current one that we all are part of). Radha is considered an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and Krishna is the Eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Radha and Krishna are most popularly known and worshipped as RadhaKrishna – in one form. Radha is Krishna’s supreme beloved and his childhood friend. Acrylic Painting of Krishna with his Flute - By Me. The Lord and His consort are refe

My Favorite Read - 6 - The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev (and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer)

So, now that I want to get into some serious mountaineering activities, I started with reading books on mountains. When you check for top few books on mountains the one that comes up is " Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer " followed by “  The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev" ; both based on the 1996 Everest disaster which was made quite controversial. I started with "Into Thin Air' and while I was reading, I was continuously in conflict with Jon's views. Mind you, my memory is pretty weak when it comes to remembering details of any story - whether its books or movies. I had watched few documentaries and the Everest movie based on this topic; but that was a while ago. when I started reading this book 2 weeks back, I had no background; you can say I was totally new to this story.  And yet, it was difficult for me to understand some of Jon's accusations or feelings.  But nevertheless, Jon's style of writing was amazing; he knew how to keep reader's

Why "Wake Up Sid" movie is my favorite :)

I am very selective about the Bollywood movies that I choose to watch. I don’t like the typical commercial, masaledar movies without any storyline, characters, screenplay and acting. Most of them are ruled out just by looking at the Name of the movie, its banner, its actors and director. And some which pass these filter criteria get eliminated when I watch their trailers. Very few end up in my watch list. And some movies I end up watching forcibly with my family or friends. Wake up Sid was one such movie, that I came across because my friends chose to watch that movie over tea 4 yrs back. We never completed watching that movie; couple of them found it boring and we got deviated from watching the movie into some other matargashti . I think 2 years back, when I was finding something to watch, I picked up this movie – just because I wasn’t finding anything appealing to watch. And I simply fell in love with this movie despite of its weak story. Konkana Sen is a talented actress

Alaska Diaries - Spooky "Hello" and Northern Lights

So, we had obviously Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) on our list in this Alaska Trip. Whether we could see it or not, we weren't sure. Weather, Clouds, it's frequency of occurrence everything played a role. We were just staying hopeful that we could get atleast a glimpse of it; and that was the only reason for us to drive North towards Fairbanks.  Aurora Borealis that night We started at 12:30 in the night, on the remote roads of Fairbanks peeping out of the car's window to see if we can see THE LIGHTS ! And we were testing the slightly doubtful clouds by clicking its picture to see if it was just another passing cloud or was really the hidden aurora. We turned into Old Murphy Crossroad, pulled over the curbside and started clicking the pictures of the sky, and it showed green streaks. Wow.. we were excited and started clicking more pictures at different corner of sky to see more of aurora.  And suddenly I heard quite a heavy toned " Hello " right ove

Home is a house without loved ones!

Home is a house without loved ones! It was September 24th 2005 when I left my home and since then till now I have been to home like some far away relative staying out of town, visiting our family once or twice in a year during diwali or New Year or some ones wedding. A guest in my own home! I joined this software industry on 26th September 2005 in Mysore, then I travelled to Pune in 2006 for a year and then to Bangalore in 2007 for one more year and then to London in 2008 for roughly a year and now in USA-2009. In all these 4 years, I have been busy. Busy getting adjusted to life outside home, for the one who has never stayed out of home, in even a hostel before – to handle this freedom yes definitely thrilling J, seeing new places, making new friends, keeping in touch with old ones. Professional career, half yearly appraisal fights, CRRs, freaking and idiotic managers, some stupid colleagues, some shrewd ones, and some of your own frequency. All this while, I did not really miss my ho
